What is a Dental Bridge?

A dental bridge fills a gap of one or more missing teeth by literally forming a bridge across it. The bridge is anchored on either side with crowns or other supports, which can be placed over adjacent natural teeth or dental implants.

The bridge itself is made up of false teeth called “pontics,” which can be made of porcelain, gold, alloys or composite materials. dental bridgeThe pontics provide a firm chewing surface and protect the structural integrity of your surrounding teeth.

Types of Dental Bridges

There are three primary types of dental bridges, identifiable by the way they are held in place:
  • Traditional bridges are anchored in place on either side with dental crowns. The crown can be placed over natural teeth or dental implants. These bridges fill in gaps between teeth and are the most common type of bridge. These bridges are sometimes also called fixed partial dentures.
  • Cantilever bridges are adjacent on just one side to teeth, for example to fill in the rearmost missing teeth. The front of the bridge is attached to a crown placed on the adjacent tooth. Because this type of bridge can place too much force on the natural tooth, it is not common; placing an implant at the rear and using a traditional bridge is often a better solution.
  • Maryland bonded bridges are bridges supported by metal or porcelain wings bonded to the back surface of your natural teeth. They’re sometimes called resin-bonded bridges and are generally made of porcelain or plastic prosthesis.
Of the three types, traditional bridges are the sturdiest, although they may not be right for everyone. Your dentist can help you choose which option is best for your needs and answer any questions you may have about the process. Contact Fife Dental Care today to get started!
