The Dental Implant Procedure

Dental implants are a permanent, natural-looking replacement for missing teeth. However, we realize that the procedure may be intimidating. At Fife Dental Care in Rio Rancho, NM, we do everything we can to put you at complete ease, and that starts before your procedure by giving you information so you know what to expect.

Before Your Dental Implant Procedure

Before the implant can be placed in the jawbone, Dr. Fife will assess your bone density. Bone that is porous or thin may be supplemented by bone grafting, which may be completed during the same appointment as the dental implant procedure.

During one of the pre-procedure visits you may also select the color of the artificial tooth (pontic) that will be placed on the metal post (if any).

Placing Mini and Full Dental Implants

Full and mini dental implants both have a rounded metal post that protrudes above the gum tissue to which the pontic or other dental appliance will be attached on one end and a screw, the threads of which provide sites for the bone to grow around during the osseointegration process, at the other. During the procedure, the threaded portion of the dental implant is embedded in the jaw bone.

To be prepared for the mini or full dental implant procedures, you should:

  • Stop use of all tobacco products for at least 24 hours
  • Take any medications prescribed for pre-op care and/or sedation treatment

When you come in for the procedure, Dr. Fife will use local anesthetic to completely numb the area. If you elect to have oral conscious sedation, additional doses of medication may be administered as well, and you must have a driver to pick you up after your procedure.

Post Dental Implant Procedure Care

The success of your mini or full dental implant is largely determined by your health and at-home oral care. Because tobacco interferes with the healing process, it is very important that you avoid tobacco use for at least 24 hours after your procedure and minimize use for several months. You will be given a copy of detailed dental implant care instructions following your procedure.
