Once amalgam is placed in the tooth, the mercury content expands and contracts in response to temperature changes. The expansion can put pressure on the tooth walls, potentially causing small fractures over time. Composite resins, however, never require the removal of healthy tooth tissue, and the material bonds to the tooth, creating a seal and a fortified tooth structure.
