Why You May Need Wisdom Tooth Extraction

Wisdom teeth by themselves do not cause dental problems. Problems arise when wisdom teeth erupt (or begin to erupt) in a mouth without room to accommodate a third set of molars. Potential problems include:

  • Tooth pain caused by wisdom teeth pushing against neighboring teeth and/or tooth roots
  • Crowding, which can lead to alignment problems that can cause TMJ pain and/or undo previous orthodontic work

Because wisdom teeth can often be hard to reach, food debris and bacteria can build up, leading to cavities and/or infections of the gum tissue.

The Solution to Wisdom Teeth Problems

Tooth extraction is the only way to completely prevent or remedy problems caused by wisdom teeth. Many people think they need to be completely sedated for the procedure, but that is really not true. Wisdom tooth extractions are not very different from other tooth extractions. The procedure may be done at Fife Dental Care under oral conscious sedation.

Wisdom teeth that are (or are likely to) causing tooth pain, crowding and/or infection should be removed. While many people feel they must be completely unconscious for wisdom tooth extraction, the procedure can be safely and comfortably performed using less anesthetics.

Dr. Fife is licensed to provide oral conscious sedation, which uses oral medications to help you relax and block pain signals. Along with local anesthetics at the site(s) for wisdom tooth extraction, oral conscious sedation is sufficient to allow most patients to comfortably complete the procedure. Sedation dentistry eliminates many of the risks associated with general anesthesia, making this approach to wisdom tooth extraction a safe alternative.
