Tooth Replacement Options

Missing teeth can be a painful and embarrassing problem. One missing tooth can often lead to additional tooth loss as stress is distributed unevenly across the remaining teeth. If you are currently missing teeth or have teeth that may need to be extracted due to damage or decay, Fife Dental Care can help you choose the right tooth replacement option to protect your oral health.

Why Replace a Missing Tooth?

Teeth are held in place in part by their roots, which are anchored within the jaw, and the presence of neighboring teeth. However, teeth are not firmly fixed in place; they can and do move when force is applied to them. This is what makes dental realignment (braces) effective; it’s also one reason why one missing tooth can lead to additional tooth loss.

When one tooth is lost, the surrounding teeth may begin to shift into that empty space, causing them to loosen in their sockets. Additionally, each lost tooth places greater stress on the remaining teeth during chewing and other activities. This can lead to a greater likelihood of breakage and enamel wear.

Tooth Replacement Options

There are multiple options for replacing a missing tooth or teeth, depending on your situation:
  • Dental Implants are single prosthetic teeth that are anchored to your jaw bone with a small titanium rod. The implant looks and functions like a natural tooth.
  • Dental Bridges consist of one or more prosthetic teeth held in place by abutment teeth on either side. The abutment teeth may be your natural teeth or implants. The bridge fills the gap of missing teeth but rests on the gum line rather than beneath it.
  • Partials and Dentures are removable devices made to fit your mouth. Partial and full dentures are available, depending on the number of teeth you need replaced.
Depending on the number of teeth you need replaced, the current health of your smile, and your budget for dental care, the best option may vary. Contact Fife Dental Care for a consultation today to learn more about your options.
