Saving Your Natural Tooth is Always Our First Priority
At Fife Dental Care in Rio Rancho, NM, we provide excellent preventative care and do everything we can to help our patients keep their natural teeth through the least invasive methods possible. But when infection reaches the root of a tooth, root canal therapy is often the best — and only — option to preserve it.
Left untreated, a tooth infection doesn't resolve on its own. It spreads, worsens, and can eventually threaten neighboring teeth and your overall health. Root canal therapy stops that progression, eliminates the pain, and saves a tooth that might otherwise need to be extracted.

Symptoms of a Tooth Root Infection or Abscess
In its early stages, tooth decay is often asymptomatic — it causes no pain and may only be detected by a dental X-ray or probing during a routine exam. However, if left untreated, bacteria can penetrate deeper into the tooth, infecting the pulp chamber and root. While some patients may still experience no symptoms at that stage, most people will begin to notice warning signs.
Contact us right away if you are experiencing any of the following:
- Severe pain when chewing, biting, or applying pressure
- Sensitivity to hot or cold that lingers or intensifies even after the temperature source has been removed
- Tooth discoloration
- Swollen, tender, or painful gums around the affected tooth
- A persistent or recurring pimple on the gums, also called a dental abscess
- A bad taste in the mouth that doesn't go away
Why You Should Not Put Off Root Canal Therapy
Putting off root canal treatment can lead to more severe oral health issues, including a full dental abscess. In an abscess, bacteria-infected pus collects below the root of the tooth, causing significant swelling and severe pain in the mouth and jaw. If left untreated, the infection can progress into bone and other soft tissues.
Treating the infection at this point may require more extensive measures — including root canal therapy, removal of necrotic tissue, and in some cases bone grafting. Implants or bridges may also be necessary to restore the appearance and function of your smile if the tooth cannot be saved. What could have been a straightforward root canal becomes a far more complex and costly situation.
What Happens During Root Canal Therapy
- Examination and Diagnosis: Dr. Fife will take digital X-rays and examine the tooth to confirm the extent of the infection and determine whether root canal therapy is the right course of treatment.
- Anesthesia: Local anesthetic is administered to numb the tooth and surrounding area completely. You should not feel pain during the procedure. For patients who feel anxious, sedation options are also available.
- Removing the Infected Tissue: A small opening is made in the top of the tooth to access the pulp chamber and root canals. The infected or damaged pulp tissue is carefully removed, and the canals are cleaned and shaped.
- Sealing the Tooth: Once cleaned, the root canals are filled with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha and sealed to prevent reinfection. A temporary filling is placed while the final restoration is prepared.
- Restoring the Tooth: In most cases, a tooth that has had root canal therapy will need a crown to restore its full strength and protect it from fracture. Dr. Fife will discuss the appropriate restoration for your tooth based on its location and condition.
