Foundation of a Healthy Smile Starts Here
A routine dental exam and cleaning might seem simple, but it's one of the most important things you can do for your long-term oral health. Regular visits allow us to catch small problems before they become costly ones, keep your teeth and gums in top condition, and give you the kind of clean that brushing and flossing alone simply can't achieve.
At Fife Dental Care, our exams and cleanings are thorough, unhurried, and tailored to your individual needs. We take the time to actually talk with you — about what you're noticing, what's changed, and what you want for your smile. No rushing, no guessing, no surprises.
Schedule a Cleaning
What Happens During a Dental Exam
- Examine your teeth for signs of decay, cracking, or wear
- Evaluate your gum tissue for signs of inflammation or periodontal disease
- Check your bite and jaw for any irregularities
- Screen for oral cancer — a quick, painless, and potentially life-saving step
- Review your digital X-rays to identify issues not visible to the naked eye
- Discuss any changes in your health, medications, or concerns since your last visit
What Happens During a Professional Cleaning
A professional cleaning — also called a prophylaxis or prophy — removes the plaque and tartar buildup that regular brushing and flossing can't fully reach. Even the most diligent home routine leaves behind deposits over time, and without professional removal, those deposits lead to decay and gum disease.
During your cleaning, our hygienist will:
- Remove plaque and tartar from all tooth surfaces, including along and below the gumline
- Polish your teeth to remove surface stains and leave them feeling smooth and fresh
- Floss between every tooth to clear any remaining debris
- Rinse thoroughly to leave your mouth feeling clean
How Often Should Rio Rancho Residents Come in
For most patients, we recommend a dental exam and cleaning every six months. However, some patients benefit from more frequent visits — particularly those managing gum disease, dry mouth, or other conditions that increase the risk of decay or infection.
If you're over 50, your risk profile may have shifted since your younger years. Medications, changes in saliva production, and natural gum recession can all make your teeth more vulnerable. Dr. Fife will help you determine the visit schedule that makes the most sense for where you are right now.
It's Been a While? No Problem
If you haven't been to the dentist in a few years — or longer — you're in good company. Many of our patients come to us after an extended gap, and we never make anyone feel bad about it. We start exactly where you are, assess what's going on, and put together a clear, manageable plan to get your oral health back on track.
There's no lecture, no judgment — just honest, caring dentistry from a team that genuinely wants to help.
