Toothaches

Teeth are covered with a hard protective surface called enamel. There are no nerve endings in enamel, so damage to it can sometimes go unnoticed. However, the inner pulp of the tooth is filled with nerves and blood vessels, and damaged enamel can expose these, leading to a toothache.

Common reasons for tooth pain include:

Pain may be constant or intermittent. It may be throbbing or sharp. You may notice visible swelling or inflammation of the gums around the affected tooth. Headaches and jaw pain are also common. If infection is present, you may have a bad taste in your mouth, unusually foul breath, and a low-grade fever.

Toothache is unpleasant to endure, and oral infections can lead to significant problems if left untreated. If you’re experiencing a toothache, you should see a dentist as soon as possible. This is especially important if the pain is severe, accompanied by earache or fever, or if the pain is constant for more than one or two days; these are all signs of infection that can spread and involve other systems of the body.
